Genius Forest Schools

  • Nature Play That Nurtures the Whole Child

At Genius Early Years, we believe some of the most powerful learning doesn’t happen inside four walls—it happens beneath trees, beside rivers, and under open skies. Our Forest School sessions offer tamariki the chance to explore, discover, and grow through meaningful play in the natural world. These special experiences are more than just fun outdoor days—they are carefully guided, developmentally rich learning opportunities grounded in the principles of Te Whāriki and Nature Play – Taiao.
  • What Are Forest Schools?

Our tamariki and whānau enjoy great sessions at our Forest Schools. The little ones just can’t wait to explore the great outdoors, and just generally have a good time interacting with nature.

Our forest school sessions operate under the guiding principle of Te Whāriki Learning Objectives of Nature Play – Taiao, where children gain an understanding of both their own environment and the wider environment.

  • Top Benefits of Forest School for Tamariki

    Confidence & Independence
Children gain a sense of autonomy as they take appropriate risks, make choices, and explore their surroundings freely.

    Knowledge & Environmental Awareness
Nature play nurtures an understanding and respect for the living world. Tamariki observe natural cycles, learn about plants and wildlife, and build a relationship with the whenua.

    Social & Emotional Skills
Through group play, tamariki build empathy, patience, cooperation, and an awareness of how their actions affect others.

    Motivation & Focus
The open-ended nature of outdoor play stimulates curiosity and concentration. Children are more engaged, motivated, and able to stay focused for longer periods of time.

    Physical & Sensory Development
Climbing, running, digging, balancing—nature play is rich with opportunities to strengthen gross motor skills, balance, coordination, and sensory awareness.

  • What Are Forest Schools?

Forest Schools are outdoor learning sessions where children are encouraged to connect with Papatūānuku (Earth Mother) and explore the natural world through play, curiosity, and adventure.

Children lead their own learning—climbing, collecting, observing, building, and creating—while developing a deeper understanding of themselves, each other, and their environment.

Our Forest Schools are open to all children and whānau from our local community and take place in safe, beautiful natural locations. They are facilitated by qualified teachers who understand how to support learning through nature-based experiences
